Chapter 26

Nick

"Ineed my things," I whined, actually whined when I talked to Blaze over the phone.

"What do you need?" he demanded.

"My bodywash, shampoo, clothes…I don't know, fucking moisturizer. And my underwear. I'm walking around with my ass exposed."

"Was it exposed when Ash was around?"

"Sure, and I mooned him."

I heard his low laugh. "Make a list. Text it to me."

I hung up on him. Ash had come over and hadn't been helpful about me coming into work either.

"You look like shit…like you got shot. Cap has been crystal clear; you stay home for at least two full fuckin' days, sugah, and then we can see."

"What's goin' on? Sha, a girl can't get shot without y'all behavin' like I'm at the end of my life or somethin'."

"Do you know how many years of my life got shaved off when I had your blood on my hands?"

Ash was a calm guy with his Texan drawl and eat-me smile. But this Ash was pissed as hell. Beyond that, he was scared, and that, more than anything else, made me calm my ass down.

I was going out of my mind, sitting in the apartment, waiting for Blaze like I was some fucking housewife. I'd decided not to take any more painkillers. Pain was good. Pain meant you were alive. I picked up my weapon from the dresser in the bedroom and walked up to the door feeling like a moron wearing one of Blaze's T-shirts with faded calligraphy about a jazz festival in Munich, no panties, and socks that were too big for me.

"Who is it?" I asked tentatively.

"This is Matty Benedict. I'm Mr. Rome Decuir's executive assistant."

I frowned. I had met Matty when we'd been to BBH. I looked through the peephole to be certain, and when I saw a trim woman in her fifties with platinum blonde hair, I opened the door.

She looked at my gun, and I sighed, putting it down on the dining table. "Sorry about that."

She held up a bag with a Saks Fifth Avenue logo. "Just bringing supplies." She was amused.

"Come on in."

Matty set the bag on the coffee table and looked around. "This is smaller than I thought it would be."

"But nice." I felt some reason to defend the place. After all, Gaia had lived here, and now Blaze did.

"Mr. Doucet…Mr. Blaze Doucet asked me to shop for you." She pointed to the bag. "I bought some clothes; he said you were a size six."

"How the fuck does he know my size?"

Her lips quivered into an almost smile. "He insisted you needed underwear."

I flushed and resisted the urge to tug at the hem of the T-shirt.

"And since you didn't
